Writing Desk Build

Writing desk build can be a great shop project which is lots of fun and very useful in the end.

It is important to decide the location and size of the desk to assure the desk fits.

The size of this desk in this post will be 4′ long 30″ high and 20″ deep. (If made a different size, alter your material list), This would vary depending on the current size of your already existing Office Furniture, you’re going to want to make sure everything is in proportion.

Figure out the Material List

Materials can be purchased at most home building stores.

Material Neededwriting desk build

1 – 4″x 4″ board 10′ long (for desk legs)

1 – 20″ x 48″ x 1″ thick board (desktop)

2 – 1″ x 4″ board 6′ long (for desk rails )

Screws 3/4″ and 1/2″

12 metal 2″ x 3″ angle brackets (to attach legs to desk rails and desktop)

Wood finish ( Min Wax or paint depending on your chose of finish)

Tools Needed For Writing Desk Buildwriting desk build

Electric screwdriver —— electric sander with 80 – 150 – and 220 grit ——– skill saw

Step #1

:- cut the 4″ x 4″ x 10′ into 29 1/4 long pieces (legs)writing desk build

:- cut one of the 1″ x 4″ x 6′ board so you have one 38 3/4″piece and 2 – 11″ pieces (desk rails)

:- cut second 1″ x 4″ x 6′ cut a 38 3/4″ piece and save the rest for corner bracing.

Step #2

:- sand rough ends of cut 4″ x 4″ pieces to ensure they are level and flat.

Step #3

:- attach metal angle brackets to top of each 4″ x 4″ legs with 3/4″ screws. Use a scrap piece of 1″ x 4″ towriting desk build determine how far in the bracket will go. Once brackets are installed to legs, turn upside down and attach the side rails to the brackets.

Step #4

:- once all 1″ x 4″ pieces are connected, turn desk right side up making sure it is square and legs are plumb.

Step #5

:-once everything is plumb and square, cut four 7 1/2″ pieces from remaining 1″ x 4″ for corner bracing. Install bracing with 1 1/2″ screws.writing desk build

Step #6

:- sand all sharp edges and flat surfaces

Step #7

:- apply stain or paint to the desk depending on your likings. ( if you chose to paint the legs and framework and stain the top, attach top after painting and staining has been completed)

Step #8writing desk build

:- using glue and 2″ x 3″ metal brackets, attach the desktop to the framework.
